One thing I've noticed about my previous posts is that I'm constantly recommending people to wear slim-fitted clothing. And it's true, I recommend anyone and everyone to buy clothing that contours to one's body in a flattering way. However, as I keep recommending this option to everyone, undoubtedly the question will arise... what about heavier men who can't fit into slim-fitted clothing?
Now, I want to make sure that people understand that I'm not telling everyone to wear skin tight clothing marked "extra-slim-fit," because frankly, not everyone will be able to comfortably fit into those types of clothes. What I am saying though, is that everyone should wear clothing that doesn't come with extra, unneeded fabric. Regardless of your height or weight, clothing that billows and bags at the sleeves, thighs, ankles, and stomach, is not going to help anyone look better.
My recommendation is to look for clothing marked "slim fit" to start off with, even if you have a couple extra pounds on you. There's a high likelihood that you'll still fit into these clothes, and probably look better. Just because a shirt is marked "slim fit," doesn't mean that it requires a very slim man to wear it.
The other thing to remember is that slim fitted clothing might feel rather tight and awkward at first, especially if you've previously been wearing boxy, classic-fit pieces. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that these clothes don't properly fit you. The chances are higher that you're simply not used to fabric hugging your body, as it properly should.
If you still have free range of movement, and aren't in danger of popping buttons loose or tearing seams, then you're probably okay! You'll start to get used to this new fit of clothing in no time, and you'll be styling more than you ever had been.
Of course, you also need to make sure that you're not wearing pants that reveal everything about your manhood, or shirts that bust open the moment you stretch out your arms. Be true to yourself, whatever shape or size you may be.
Alas, if city-fit, slim-fit, custom-fit, or any other similarly named fit doesn't work for you, go with the classic fit to start off with, and then seek out a tailor to help reduce any billowing or bagging. You'll be surprised to see that reducing fabric is quite an easy job for most tailors, and fairly cost-efficient. Just make sure the shoulders fit properly, since that will be the hardest part to alter.
In all, I just want to remind everybody that even if you have a couple extra pounds on you, wearing slimmer clothing is the way to go. Clothes should fit you well, and extra fabric is not indicative of a proper fit. Do yourself a solid and start looking for clothes that fit properly, as that will be the first and most important step to looking amazing.
